On 12 November 1991 at Santa Cruz cemetery, Indonesian troops fired on a funeral procession for a CNRM sympathizer who had been shot a few days earlier by occupation forces. As many as two hundred people may have been killed in the massacres and subsequent removal of witnesses. Film of the incident smuggled from Indonesia played a major role in drawing international attention to the Timor issue.
