Eastern Indian Ocean according to Idrisi (12th century)


The map below shows some of the place names used by Idrisi and their probable modern equivalents. The precise identity of some of the place names is disputed.  In the oldest sources used by Idrisi, for instance, the term Zabaj appears to refer to Java, whereas later sources seem to apply the name to the kingdom of Srivijaya in southern Sumatra.  On the other hand, the name Sarbua or Sribuza has also often been interpreted as Srivijaya.
