In 1867 Buitenzorg was absorbed into Batavia and Patjitan was absorbed into Madioen. When Bali and Lombok became a separate residency in 1882, Banjoewangi was re-absorbed into Besoeki. Until 1883, the island of Madoera, with the exception of a small area around Pamekasan, was indirectly ruled like Soerakarta and Jogjakarta. In that year, however, Soemenep was brought under Dutch rule; Bangkalan and Sampang followed in 1885.
