Javanese in Indonesia, 2000

Description

The 2000 census invited people to identify themselves by one of a number of pre-determined ethnic categories.  This map shows the proportion of people in each province identifying themselves as ‘Jawa' (Javanese).  This category was distinct from four other ethnic categories associated with Java (Sunda, Banten, Betawi and Madura) but these categories accounted for only relatively small numbers of people outside the island of Java. In many areas, Javanese communities date from the colonial period.
