Timor and nearby islands 1500-1800


In the early 17th century, the small island of Roti was divided into more than twenty tiny, antagonistic states. Attempts by some rulers to draw the VOC into their disputes led to a series of Dutch campaigns between 1656 and 1681 which devastated many island communities but Roti did not come firmly under Dutch control until 1756.
